Fur Care
-
The
best thing that you can do to extend the life of a fur is have it stored
properly by
a furrier during the warm months. Be sure to check that it will be in cold
storage. Cold storage regulates both the temperature and humidity, which
optimizes the conditions for your fur.
-
Have your fur cleaned
and glazed by a furrier every other year if you don’t wear it often, or every
year if you wear it regularly. Your furrier will inform you of any problem
areas. Have repairs done promptly to ward off large repairs.
-
Your fur coat or
jacket should be hung on a wide hanger – preferably from a furrier, but if
not, a padded hanger will do. It's stressful to the shoulders if you have
it hanging on a regular wire hanger, and a wider hanger distributes the weight
more evenly.
-
Store your fur
loosely in a closet away from light and heat. If you don’t wear it often,
cover it loosely with a natural fiber bag (e.g., cotton, silk) so that it
may breathe. DON’T cover it with plastic.
-
If your fur is mildly rained or snowed on, just gently dab it with a towel, shake it out
and hang it up to dry. If it gets water-soaked, take it to your furrier as
soon as possible. DON’T brush it, use a hair dryer or hang it up near a heat
vent. The heat will dry your fur out.
-
Try to avoid spraying
perfume or hair spray on your fur, as the alcohol contained in them can dry
the pelts. Also, the scent may get into the pelts and not come out.
-
DON'T
store your fur in a cedar closet or
with moth balls. The smell will permeate the pelts and may not be
removed.
